세계에서 가장 유명한 시인 TOP 5

 

 

누구나 시를 쓸 수 있지만,

아무나 좋은 시를 쓸수는 없습니다.

우리 나라에도 여러 유명한 시인들이 있지만,

우리가 교과서에서 배웠던 그분들 뿐만 아니라

언어를 뛰어넘어 세계적으로 유명한 시인들이 있습니다.

 

만약 여러분의 자녀가 세계에서 가장 유명한 시인이 누구냐고 물어본다면

"엄마는 시는 잘 몰라서...", "아빠는 운동을 좋아해서..." 라고 대답할건가요?

1. 19세기 여류 시인 에밀리 디킨슨 (Emily Dickinson)

 

1830년 12월 10일 매사추세츠의 청교도 가정에서 태어난 그녀는

19세기를 대표하는 여류 시인으로

평생을 시작(時作)에 전념하며 독신으로 지냈습니다.

(1830.12.10 ~ 186.5.15)

그녀는 자연과 사랑, 청교도주의를 배경으로 한 죽음과 영원 등의 주제를 많이 다뤘으며

운율이나 문법에서 파격적이었습니다.

19세기에 인정받지 못했으나, 20세기 들어와서 이미지즘이나 형이상학적인 시의 유행과

더불어 높게 평가되고 있습니다.

아래의 시는 에밀리 디킨슨의 유명한 시 중 하나인 "죽음을 위해 내가 멈출수 없기에"입니다.

Because I could not Stop for Death

Because I could not stop for Death
He kindly stopped for me
The Carrige held but just Ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove--He knew no haste

My labor and my leisure too,

2. 영국의 낭만주의 시인 윌리엄 워즈워스(William Wordsworth)

1770년 4월 7일 영국 컴벌런드 호수 지방에서 5남매 중 둘째 아들로 태어난 그는

8살때 어머니가 결핵으로 세상을 떠났고, 13살때 아버지 또한 세상을 떠났습니다.

이런 가정사 때문인지 그의 시에서는 빈번하게 가족 관계의 중요성을 강조하는 경향이 있습니다.

윌리엄 워드워스는 장시 "서곡"과 "소요"라는 장시로 유명하며,

그의 작품들은 19세기 유럽 낭만주의 문학의 이정표가 되었습니다.

 

3. 20세기 가장 유명한 시인, 로버트 프로스트 (Robert Frost)

 

농장 생활 경험을 살려 농민과 자연을 노래한 현대 미국 시인으로,

가장 순수하고 고전적인 시인으로 꼽힙니다.

J.F 케네디 대통령 취임식에 자작시를 낭송한 것으로 유명하며

퓰리처상을 4회나 수상했다고 합니다.

유명한 저서로는 처녀시집인 "소년의 의지"가 있으며,

가지 않은 길 이라는 시로도 유명합니다.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth

 

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

4. 런던의 낭만주의 시인 존 키츠 (John Keats)

낭만주의 운동의 또다른 대표 시인인 존 키츠는

1795년 런던에서 태어났습니다.

그는 살아있을때는 별로 유명하지 않았으나, 1821년 결핵으로 사망한 후

그의 진가를 인정받아 명성이 높아졌습니다.

대표작으로는 "Ode to the Nightingale"(나이팅게일에게 부치는 노래) 가 있습니다.

 

5. 빅토리아 시대의 대표 시인, 알프레드로드 테니슨 (Alfred Lord Tennyson)

1809년 8월 6일에 영국에서 태어난 그는

오늘날까지도 가장 유명한 영국 시인으로 꼽히고 있습니다.

빅토리아 시대의 주요 저서로는 "인 메모리엄"이 있으며,

한국인들에게 잘 알려진 시로는  "Tears, Idle Tears"가 잇습니다.

 Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean,
Tears from the depth of some divine despair
Rise in the heart, and gather in the eyes,
In looking on the happy autumn-fields,
And thinking of the days that are no more.

물론 이 외에도 유명하고 능력있는 시인들이 많지만,

시를 좋아하는 사람이라면

위에 언급한 다섯 시인의 시를 한번쯤 읽어보는것도

좋을 것 같습니다.
